Soffit vents are openings in your soffit boards that are designed to allow ventilation into your attic space.
They often work alongside vents fitted higher up do allow cool, fresh air to enter in the lower section of the roof and forcing warm, damper air out through the upper vents.
There are three main types of vents for soffits:
- Vented boards
Single units where the boards already have vents built in. - Strip Vents
Boards have vents running along their length, often all the way along the length of the side of the building - Push In Vents
Vents are fitted into drilled holes. These are often additions to the original roofline, to improve ventilation.
The benefits of soffit vents are mainly to prevent moisture related damage, such as wood rotting and mould taking hold.
Without vents you would need gaps to allow air to circulate, but that also allows flies and other bugs to enter, which isn't ideal in your loft space.
